PIERSOL,S.H (Sampson H)...Died suddenly this morning at his home in Clay District. He was sitting at the breakfast table and suddenly fell over dead. Mr. Piersol was the father of ex-editor Piersol, of the city and was 73 years of age - from the Daily State Journal Apr. 30, 1891
 
BOONE, Jesse T.... The funeral of the late Jesse T. Boone occurred Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Red Hill; being conducted by Rev. G. H. Devol and Rev. E. H. Waters. The obsequies were attended by a number of local people. The death of Mr. Boone was due to old age, he being seventy-six years old when the end came. He is survived by a wife, four daughters and two sons. He was a native of Harrison County and a veteran of the Civil War.

BOONE, Harriett L.  The funeral of Mrs. Harriett L. Boone, whose death occurred Saturday afternoon will be held Tuesday morning from the United Brethren Church at Red Hill. Rev. T. H. Devol and Rev. Fred Slaughter will have charge of the services. Interment will be made at the church cemetery. BOONE, Luther Marian ... Funeral services for Luther Marian Boone, aged 82, of Red Hill, who died January 27, are to be held Sunday at 2 o'clock from the Red Hill United Brethren Church, in charge of the Rev. Fred Slaughter and the Rev. Ralph Mahoney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Boone had been a resident of Wood county for 66 years and was a member of the Red Hill United Brethren Church. Surviving are four daughters and one son, Mrs. N. J. Wharton, Mrs. Grace Robinson and Mrs. Zanna Foggin, all of this county, Miss Jessie Boone, at home, and Elmer Boone of Red Hill, and three sisters, Mrs. Ida Skidmore of Dallison, Mrs. Flora Hissom of Red Hill and Mrs. Sylvia Lee of Long Beach, California.

PURSLEY, Lillie Mae, 56, died at her home on Spencer - Arnoldsburg Route, at 11:35 o'clock Tuesday morning. She had been ill several months following a paralytic stroke. Funeral rites will be held from the Egypt church this afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Scarbrough in charge, and interment will follow in the Egypt cemetery, conducted by the Vandale Funeral Home. Mrs. Pursley was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of Minter and Miranda Starcher Bell, but had lived many years in Roane County. She is survived by her husband, EM Pursley; five sons, Dennis and Jesse of Spencer, Manford of Edison Ohio, Marvin and Willis of Washington DC; and five daughters, Mrs. Opha Metz of Letherbark, Mrs. Floda McCurdy of Akron Ohio, Mrs. Glennis Epling of Spencer, and Misses Orfie and Ruth Pursley at home. - Feb, 1943
 
BOONE, Elmer C.... Elmer Clay Boone, 73, of Belpre, Ohio Rt. 1, died Monday at 10:15 p.m. in Camden Clark Hospital, Parkersburg, West Virginia. He was born March 26, 1886 in Wood County. W. Va., a son of the late Luther and Rebecca Piersol Boone. He married second Emma Angle who survives. Mr. Boone farmed many years in Belpre, Rt 1. He was a member of Burn Hill Unithed Bretren Church. Survivors include his wife, eight sons by a previous marriage, Jess, Robert, Lee, Miles, Ray, Luther, George, and Jack, all of Parkersburg; six daughters by a previous marriage, Mrs. Grace Cross of Barberton, Ohio; Mrs Elizabeth Anderson of Wilmington, Calif.; Mrs. Rebecca Flynn, Mrs. Garnet Anderson, and Mrs. Ruby Hayes, all of Parkersburg; and Mrs. Luelva Looney of Vienna, W. Va.; and a sister Mrs. Zanna Foggin of Parkersburg. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly Ohio with burial in the Beverly Cemetery. The body is at the family home where it will remain until Thursday morning when it will be received by the funeral home.

BOONE, SOPHIA BEORN...81, of 312 36th St., Viena, died in the St, Joseph's Hospital Monday evening.
She was born in Wood Co. Sept. 24, 1886, daughter of George Beorn and Elizabeth Affolter Beorn and Elizabeth Affolter Beorn and was a member of the S. Parkersburg EUB Church.
Survivors include 7 sons, Jesse T, Lee, George, Miles, Luther, and Jack Boone, all of Parkersburg, Ray Boone of Euclid, O; 6 daughters Mrs. Grace Cross, Barberton, O, Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, California, Mrs. Rebecca Flinn, Vienna; Mrs. Garnet Anderson, Parkersburg, Mrs. Ruby Hays, Parkersburg, Mrs. Luelva Looney, Vienna; one sister Mrs. Gertrude Lutz, Akron O; 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 sons, one daughter, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
 
CROSS, Lawrence Leonard....age 79, of Rt. 2, Little Hocking, Ohio, died Monday at University Hospital in Columbus. He was born in Akron, OH, the son of the late Leonard and Lydia Gantz Cross. He had been employed with PPG for 25 years until he retired in 1974. He was a member of Gospel Baptist Church in Torch, OH. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace Boone Cross; two daughters, Loretta Lee Friley of Parkersburg and Carolyn Marie Young of Downingtown, PA; seven grandchildren, Sherri Wright, Debbie Neidich, Kathy Barnett , Richard Cunningham, Terry Cunningham, Beverly Hitchcock and Tammy Cunningham. He had nine great grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by two sisters and five brothers. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Gospel Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Wilson and Pastor Jim Neidich officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Vaughan Funeral Home from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday and at the church one hour prior to the services. METZ, Donald Lee, 60, o f Chicago, died at St . Josephs Hospital, Parkersburg, on August 30, 1991. He was born in Calhoun County , a son of Ray and Opha Pursley Metz of Spencer . He was a veteran of th e U .S .  Army .  He is survived by Loretta Metz Friley of P arkersburg; three daughters , Sherri Smith of Parkersburg , Debbie Neidich of Little Hocking , and Kathy Barnett of Williamstown ; two brothers , Harold Metz of Akron and Allen Metz of Spencer ; and seven grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by two brothers, Gene and John Metz . Services will be at 1 p .m . Tuesday at the Leavitt Funeral Home , Parkersburg, with the Reverend Larry Haught and the Rev erend Jim Neidich officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens. METZ, Allen... Allen E. Metz, 53, of Spencer, died Saturday, June 18, 1994, at Roane General Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of Ray and Opha Pursley Metz of Spencer. He was formerly employed at Spencer State Hospital and at Crihfield's Motors as a body repairman. He was a U.S. Army veteran, participating in the Bay of Pigs incident. He was a member of Spencer Tabernacle where he served as deacon and class leader. H e was a member of American Legion Post 21. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Barbara LeMasters Metz ; one son, Michael Metz of Spencer; and one brother, Harold Metz of Akron, Ohio. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene Metz, John Metz, and Don Metz. Services were held at Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Larry Haught officiating. Burial was at the convenience of the family.

Manford L. Pursley, 86, a resident of McCaulley Care Center, Mansfield, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1995, at Mansfield General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Spencer, but had lived in the Mansfield area since 1954, moving there from Mt. Gilead, Ohio.   He was a former interior and exterior decorator and also a former Westinghouse employee.   He attended The Diamond Hill Cathedral. He is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Mary Pursley of Crestline, Ohio; Charles and Ann Pursley of Galion, Ohio; Jack and Arlene Pursley of Bellville, Ohio; Bill and Dorothy Pursley of Mansfield; Michael and Hanni Pursley of Killeen, Texas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Erma and Ed Fields of Dade City, Fla.; Geneva and Bill Booker of Shelby, Ohio; Linda and Gary Crawford of Mansfield; and Patricia and Dick Ramsey of Atlanta; two brothers, Jessie Pursley of Akron, Ohio and Bill Pursley of Parkersburg; three sisters, Glynnis, Floatie and Orpha; 35 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law, Erma Webb of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Madge Webb and Anna Faith Miller, both of Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mourie and Lilly Mae Bell Pursley; his wife, Maude Mae Miller Pursley; a brother, Marvin Pursley, two grandchildren, Mary Fields and Bryan Pursley; and a great-grandchild, Angela Cole. Services were Saturday at Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors with Dr. Bruce Philippi of Springmill Church of God officiating.   Burial was in Mansfield Memorial Park.

KESTERSON, Alma I...Alma I (Wharton) Kesterson, 82, of Kesterson Farms, Old St. Marys Pike, Parkersburg, died May 27, 2001, at Charleston Area Medical Center following a long illness. She was born June 10, 1918, in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Nathaniel J. and Hattie Boone Wharton. She was a member of Stout Memorial United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Parkersburg Chapter 14, O.E.S. She was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law: Frances and Howard Sharp, Jane and Gary Richards, Carole and Bill Morrison, all of Parkersburg, Susan and Tom Buttermore of Little Hocking, Janet and Lynn McCauley of Ripley, Julia and John Hoffman of DuBois, Pa.; two sons and daughter in law, Frank and Carolyn Kesterson and Mike Kesterson, all of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Lea Ann and Mark Dick of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Marc Engle (Anita McCauley), Belews Creek, N.C., Stephanie McCauley of Ripley, Katie and Krista Hoffman of DuBois, Pa., Bill and Jennifer Morrison, Melanie Richards and Megan Kesterson, all of Parkersburg, Lindsey Kesterson of Pennsboro; two great-grandchildren, Gregory and Bradley Dick of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Justine Frazier of Vienna. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Harry L. Kesterson in 1984; and two brothers, Olin Wharton and Berkley Wharton, who died in infancy. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, 7th Street, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Lindsay A. Thorp officiating. Burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. METZ, Ray Elmore, 99 of Spencer, WV, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001, at Eldercare of West Virginia, in Ripley. He was born December 9, 1901, at Leatherbark, Calhoun County, a son of the late William and Minnie Price Metz. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include a son, Harold E. Metz of Barberton, Ohio and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by hi s wife, Opha B. Pursley Metz in 1998 and four sons, Don, Gene, John and Allen Metz; several brothers and sisters. Graveside services were held Friday, October 26 at the Liberty Hill Cemetery, Leatherbark. John H. Taylor Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements.
 
BOONE, Miles Edward...Miles Edward Boone, 79, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Aug. 9 , 2004, at the Charleston Area Medical Center. He was bor n March 2, 1925, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Elmer Cl ay Boone and Sophia Anna (Beorn) Boone. Mr. Boone was a Wor ld War II US Army veteran and prisoner of war. He receive d the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and ha d faithfully served his country in the US and abroad, inclu ding Scotland, England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He ha d retired from McClinton Chevrolet of Parkersburg where h e had been employed as an automobile sales rep, was a membe r of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legio n and was a Baptist by faith. Mr. Boone is survived by on e son, Jeffrey A. "Jeff" Boone and wife Nikki of Belmont, N C; 2 brothers, Jesse T. Boone and George Boone, both of Par kersburg; 2 sisters, Ruby Hays of Parkersburg, and Luelva L ooney of Vienna; 2 granddaughters, Lanae Redmond of Stanley , NC, and Natalie Boone of Belmont; and several nieces an d nephews. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 5 sis ters. Burial with full military honors will take place at 1 0 am Friday, Aug. 27, at Arlington National Cemetery.
 
BOONE, Jess T ...Jess T. Boone, 85, of Parkersburg died April 11, 2005, at his residence. He was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Wood County, a son of the late Elmer and Sophia Beorn Boone.He was a businessman and former owner of Hornor & Harrison Inc., working from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of North Parkersburg Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and served as chairman for many boards. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, former chairman of the United Way and board member of the Salvation Army. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Frances Pickens Boone; four sons, Dean Boone, Kent Boone, Dave Boone and Mark Wheaton; daughter, Judy Johnson; several children whom he raised; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Luelva Looney and Ruby Hayes; and one brother, George Boone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the North Parkersburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Kent Boone officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service Friday, all at the church. HAYS, Ruby Boone, 88, of Parkersburg died Feb. 24, 2006, at the Worthington Manor Nursing Home.  She was born in Wood County, the daughter of the late Elmer C. and Sophia A. Beorn Boone. She had retired from Brockway Glass in Vienna. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and The North Parkersburg Baptist Church.  She is survived by her son, Daniel Cooper and his wife, Ann, of Parkersburg; her granddaughter, Abby Naylor of Parkersburg; her great-grandson, Zack Nicholas of Parkersburg; her brother, George D. Boone of Parkersburg; and her sister, Luelva M. Looney of Vienna; and 31 nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Cross, Elizabeth Anderson, Rebecca Flinn, Mabel Boone and Garnet Powers.; her brothers, Russell, Jessie, Robert, Lee, Ray, Miles, Luther and Jack Boone; four nephews; and one niece. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with Pastor Kent Boone officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today.
 
WHARTON, Justine Loraine...Justine Frazier Justine Frazier, 94, of Worthington Manor passed away July 11, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Wood County, a daughter of the late Nathaniel "Nat" and Harriet Boone Wharton. She and her husband, George, were the former owners of the Ohio Valley Truck Stop and the Parkette Truck Stop. Justine had worked for American Cyanamid; was a member of North Parkersburg Baptist Church; was a foster grandparent at Colin Anderson; a member of the Business and Professional Women Club of Pleasants County; and was the Belle of Pleasants County. Justine is survived by four children, Norman Frazier of Parkersburg, Lois Cunningham of Harrisville, Pa., Sue Cosco and her husband, Dom, of Venice, Fla., and Joyce Mendenhall and her husband, Dave, of Mineral Wells; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Frazier; one brother, Olin Wharton; infant brother, Berkley Wharton; a sister, Alma Wharton Kesterson; an infant granddaughter; and her son-in-law, Nelson Cunningham. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, with the Rev. Norman Butler and the Rev. Kevin Lantz officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen North Cemetery. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Boone, George D... 79, of Parkersburg, passed away July 26, 2007, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Wood County, a son of the late Elmer Clay and Sophia Anna Beorn Boone.  George had owned and operated service stations in the Parkersburg area and a tire business in Ripley. He had served in the Army Air Force during the Occupational Period following World War II, was a member of the American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg and enjoyed reading history books.  Surviving is his wife, Roberta V. Lieber Boone; two sons, Douglas E. Boone and his wife, Stephanie, of Parkersburg and Gregory Scott Boone and his wife, Tammy, of Cape Coral, Fla.; a daughter, Beth Anne Carter and her husband, Shaun, of Parkersburg; 11 grandchildren, Chad Boone, Jeremy Boone, Joshua Boone, Robert Boone, Ryan Boone, Abigail Boone, Sarah Boone, Benjamin Carter, Jacob Boone, Matthew Carter and Meredith Carter; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Boone; one sister, Luelva Looney of Vienna; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Brooks Boone on Dec. 26, 1976; eight brothers; and six sisters. The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St., Parkersburg, with his nephew, the Rev. Kent Boone officiating. Burial will follow at the Hopewell Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 15. BEORN, GILBERT EUGENE...Gilbert Eugene Beorn February 1, 1910 to October 16, 2008 - Gilbert was preceded in death by Opal, his loving wife of 67 years. He was the beloved father of Carol Lee Denholm (Paul), Darla Padgett (Lee), David Beorn, and Laura Modzel (Joe); Father-in-law of Betty Father-in-law of Betty Hobbs; grandfather of Tim, Mike, David, Dean (Vicky), Scott, Lisa (Jonathan), Tina (Guy), and David; great-grandfather of Sean, Conner, Ashley, Austin, Justin, Jordan, Laci, Rachel, and Taylor. Gilbert was a proud employee of The Akron Beacon Journal for 45 years and held many offices in the Mailers Union, including president, for 25 years. He was a leader in Methodist Men for many years and enjoyed bowling, golfing, tennis, bike riding, and swimming. He and Opal loved traveling the country together, having owned seventeen travel trailers over the years. He loved his family dearly. He was an exceptional man who was always kind, and he will be missed immensely by those he has left behind.  Services to be held Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Phoenix Memorial Park, 200 W.
